FROM THE LAY DIRECTOR "Living With Gratitude In Our God-Given Purpose"

ree

Gratitude is more than just saying “thank you” for blessings. It is a heartfelt way of living that flows from understanding who God is and why we were created. As believers, we know just how precious the gift of life is and that life is not an accident. God formed us with intention and purpose.

Admittedly, we do not always know what His purpose is. Psalm 139:13–14 reminds us, “For You created my inmost being, You knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise You because I am fearfully and wonderfully made.” It is tough to not have an attitude of gratitude after understanding this passage.

Our created purpose is to glorify God and enjoy Him forever. Paul writes in 1 Corinthians 10:31, “So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.” Every part of life, whether it is big or small; it is an opportunity to reflect on God’s goodness. Taking those quiet moments to reflect on God's many blessings can help to put things in the right perspective. Being grateful helps to anchor us in this purpose and helps to shift our perspective from mere self-centered desires to God-centered living. Living gratefully can help us to live purposefully.

Living in gratitude can transform how we view our daily lives. Instead of seeing our jobs, families, or ministries as mere obligations, we can view them as assignments entrusted to us by God. These blessings are often where God gives us opportunities to share, lead, serve and inspire. Colossians 3:17 instructs, “And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.” Gratitude is not passive but rather it can fuel active service, joy, and dedication to our calling.

Gratitude also can draw us closer to God. When we take time to count our blessings, we recognize His hand in our lives and are reminded of His faithfulness. Psalm 107:1 declares, “Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good; His love endures forever.” Gratitude is both worship and witness. It testifies to others that our hope and joy are not rooted in circumstances but in the unchanging goodness of God. We all have much to be grateful for and we should continue to take time to identify His many blessings in our lives.

As we reflect on gratitude and purpose, let us remember that we were not created simply to exist but rather to shine as God’s workmanship. Ephesians 2:10 affirms, “For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” When we live gratefully, we can align with God’s purpose and work to fulfill the good works He designed for us. In every season, may our hearts be filled with thanksgiving. Having an attitude of gratitude helps to keep us grounded and lifts our eyes to our Heavenly Father.
